Oak Island is located in southeastern North Carolina in Brunswick County on the Atlantic Ocean. The town situated mostly on Oak Island, which also contains the town of Caswell Beach and the North Carolina Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell, in Brunswick County, North Carolina. A small part of the town extends onto the mainland north of the island's bridge and the main industry of this quaint little island is tourism. Oak Island’s ten miles of unspoiled coastal strand faces south on the Atlantic Ocean. By car, the island is just 27 miles south of Wilmington, NC and 60 miles north of Myrtle Beach, SC. The area is known for its gnarled live oak trees that lean toward the ground from years of sea breezes.
Some of the island is home to year-round residents, so, the island has amenities such as a library, post office, fire department, and banks. Community attractions include intriguing shops and restaurants, shady parks with a children’s playground, golfing at the Oak Island Country Club, miniature golfing, and fishing on the three local piers. The island has been inhabited since the early 1800s; Fort Caswell was built on its eastern end in 1838.
